 Prepare to Disappoint the kids August 21, 2010

This rocket setup looks great in the pictures and on the box. It sets up easily and may work once or twice before you the the problems that the other reviewers mention.
Overall, the rocket appears to be well made, but you may have the same problems that I did: the fins loosely fit in the "gutters." On launch, the fins fly off which resulted in nozzle damage on a hard landing. Then I had the same problem as everyone else is complaining about - the rocket doesn't launch.
Steer clear.

Ok - here is a run down on this rocket and some trouble-shooting that will be extremely helpful for probably the two most common complaints in here about this product - the product will not launch (after hours of frustration) and the ballon part of the rocket rips. If you are going to read a review that will help you get this thing to work, read this.
I bought this product for my son as he is airplane and rocket crazy, and after getting over the initial excitement of opening it up, putting it together, inflating it, following instructions to the "t", gathering around it to see it fly (my wife even prepared a big jug of lemonade for the family which gathered around our yard for its maiden flight), etc.,...... it would not launch! After an hour of frustration and my wife first poking fun at me and then giving me hell such as "I thought you were an engineer" and "I can't believe you wasted $50 dollars on that piece of junk!" type thing, I decided that I was not going to let myself be defeated by a plastic toy "Made in China". I therefore embarked on a quest to understand how this darn thing is supposed to work and what was failing. It so happens that the product is a fairly clever mechanism, but as I said before, it is "Made in China", so the plastic parts and pieces are a bit touchy and if not lined up just right, the safety mechanisms will prevent it from launching. This mechanism is the culprit in preventing the rocket from launching in 99% of the reviews I read, and what it does is prevent the rocket from launching without the ballon piece in its place. The mechanism runs the plastic tubing connected to the Pressure Release Bulb through two air valves located at the base of the rocket where the ballon inserts. If the ballon is not perfectly inflated or if it goes in to the base wrinkled, chance are the two valves will not seal and when you press the Pressure Release Bulb, nothing will happen. If the rocket is locked in place and you have not been able to release the locking pin with the Pressure Release Bulb, there is no way to release it and it will stay locked in and you will be stuck. Well, chances are you have an air leak in one of these two valves. Assuming the rocket is level and that you have followed all of the instructions, you can do one of two things - (1) work the ballon around twisting it so that it seats over the valves flush and seals them. Be careful not to try to release the ballon into your face - every time you try the launch mechanism, assume it will launch. The other thing you can do if you are careful is to remove the rocket ballon, and plug the two valve holes inside the rocket base by covering them up with tape - the rocket will launch every time. DO NOT DO THIS WITH THE LAUNCHING MECHANISM PRESSURED UP AS THE ROCKET WILL LAUNCH WITHOUT THE BALLON.
The second gripe I have read about this rocket is the fact that it will rip - which has happened to us on various occasions. The patching kit included with the rocket is of little use if you have a large tear. What I suggest is you buy some good quality clear packing tape and use it to patch any tears or holes in the bladder. This will work very well and will even make your rocket sturdier at the patch point. We have patched our rocket at least a dozen times and it keeps on working - I still would not suggest trying to use this rocket in a thorn field as you would be asking for trouble.

I read all of the negative reviews but, if the directions are closely followed, this rocket is a BLAST! Here are a couple of random thoughts about the rocket:
1) We brought a few 2L bottles of water (for our water supply) and headed to the nearest baseball field on a calm day
2) Make sure the rocket is seated in the base BEFORE adding the water. If you do not do this, the water will seep out of the bottom.
3) Some people complained about how many pumps it took to launch. We had our group take turns pumping (it really does need around 140 pumps) and had another person ready to fire the rocket when instructed. There is a color-coded meter at the bottom of the pump that shows when the rocket is ready to launch.
One thing that would be nice is if there were a way to hook an air compressor to it to avoid pumping, however if you are launching it in a group - just take turns and it shouldn't be a problem.
It was a BIG hit at our Science Camp and the students all enjoyed it. I've noticed that the price tends to move around a lot. I bought this for $24.99 in the January. In the past the price has been much lower in the winter. You may want to wait until Late Fall or Winter before purchasing.

I bought this for my son's 2nd birthday and it only worked once after fiddling for 1 hour. It was a group of reasonably intelligent people who know how to follow directions trying to make this thing go.
At first, the process was fine. Assembly went without a problem. Everything clicked or slid into place as outlined in the manual. Pumping it up really does require about 140 pumps and can cause blisters (2 people out of 4). After pumping it up, the bulb used as the launch trigger never released the rocket. The launch bulb would remain deflated and wouldn't reinflate unless the balance bearing was bumbped. After tons of effort, we got it to launch once but it was only a half launch because SOMEONE squeezed the bulb prematurely. After the one launch, the bottle in the base of the rocket would start leaking after 10 pumps.
Summary: Epic failure.

The box says it cannot be returned to the store and you must contact Banzai support with any issues. I'll post an update comment once I get that done...
